When developing the Ferrari California, Pininfarina opted for a classic, sculpted chassis with a long bonnet and a passenger area that is slightly shifted towards the rear. The Ferrari California is ideal for those who want a very exclusive sports car and value driving pleasure on every occasion: a weekend out of town, a long journey, shopping in the city, or even a trip to the office. The rear luggage compartment has a capacity that is unique for a convertible of this type. For the first time, the boot is directly connected to the rear bench or seats via the folding rear seat backrest. Ferrari once again turned to its historic partner Pininfarina for the design of the California, resulting in muscular, flowing, sculpted lines in which considerable attention was paid to ensuring perfect proportions and harmoniously balanced volumes with the top up or down. The design work was carried out in close collaboration with Ferrari's own Styling Centre, and great care was taken to characterise the design and function of every single detail to convey an immediate and lasting sense of quality and craftsmanship. The flanks are characterised by a strong dynamic line that rises to the level of the door handle to create a strong and muscular contour of the rear wheel arch in keeping with the character of the car. The beltline is set high, while convex and concave surfaces follow one another with pleasant fluidity. The snout, which takes up the characteristics of the side and rear lines, has teardrop-shaped headlights and the louvred radiator grille in typical Ferrari style. The narrow air intake scoop on the bonnet and the side vents both pay homage to elements of the 1957 Ferrari California 250. The retractable hardtop differs from others in that multiple movements take place simultaneously rather than sequentially, optimising the time taken for the entire opening/closing cycle. In fact, both the soft top and the folding roof move simultaneously with a total cycle time of a few seconds. The two sections fold neatly to the other concave side, leaving much more space for the boot (240 litres in total). This stowage system is so efficient that two pieces of luggage still fit in the boot even when the roof is down.

The engine has a total displacement of 4,300 cc and a maximum output of 460 hp/338 kW at 7,750 rpm. With a specific output of 107 hp/l, its maximum torque at 5,000 rpm is 485 Nm (49 kgm), 75% of which is available at just 2,250 rpm. The Ferrari California accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 4 seconds and reaches a sensational top speed of 310 km/h. The V8 features direct fuel injection and variable ignition control (on the intake and exhaust) to guarantee outstanding performance, exceptional handling and fuel consumption and emissions that meet the strictest Euro 5 and Lev2 standards. Thanks in part to these solutions, the Ferrari California consumes just 13.1 litres/100 km (ECE combined) and has CO2 emissions of 305.6 gkm (ECE combined). The engine sound of the California has also been carefully developed as it is one of the great Ferrari characteristics that further enhances the driving pleasure, with particular attention paid to the sound perception in the cabin both with the top up and down to ensure that famous kick without compromising on acoustic comfort.

The Ferrari California retains the traditional double wishbone front suspension, while a new multilink system has been developed specifically for the rear wheels. The Multilink system improves the longitudinal flexibility of the suspension and maintains high lateral stiffness, which in practice means that the car absorbs any bumps and efficiently dampens noise and vibrations to ensure exceptional ride comfort and handling flexibility. The SCM system (magnetorheological shock absorbers) first introduced on the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano is available on request. Compared to conventional hydraulic systems, these do not require any checks or mechanical adjustments and enable much shorter response times to stresses. As a result, body movements are significantly reduced in sporty driving conditions, which has a positive effect on all dynamic indicators.
