The Mercedes-Benz 600, internally known as the W 100, was an ultra-luxury vehicle mainly for heads of state and government staff, built by Daimler-Benz in the 1960s and 1970s. The origin of the 600 lies in the mid-1950s. Fritz Nallinger, leading developer at Daimler-Benz, was responsible for developing a car at the cutting edge of technology. Among other things, the car was equipped with air suspension, an automatic transmission, power steering and power brakes. The developers also considered a model with an extended wheelbase. It soon became clear that economic success with this car would hardly be possible, as at least 37,000 marks per car would be development costs only, due to the small amount of cars that were expected to be built. The finished car’s price was 56,500 marks and more in 1964 and throughout its entire construction period, the Mercedes 600 was never making the company any money. But Daimler-Benz ran it anyway, even though mainly for image reasons. The series made its debut in September 1963 at the IAA in Frankfurt. Just under two weeks earlier, the 600 had been presented to ten automotive journalists from all over the world. The "Grand Mercedes" was very well received by the public. The saloon's equipment included many, at the time technically revolutionary features, which still cannot be taken for granted in today's vehicles. Some of these features were: air suspension, a complex hydraulic servo system (so-called "comfort hydraulics"), an electrically adjustable heating and ventilation system, air conditioning, hydraulically adjustable seats in the front, hydraulically adjustable seat bench in the rear, hydraulic window lifters and also hydraulically operated sliding roofs (a rear sliding roof was also offered, but only for long wheelbase models). The almost noiseless hydraulics were remarkable in comparison to common electric motors. However, they quickly lost power when the engine wasn’t running. The 600 was essential for the reputation of Mercedes-Benz and could be found in the fleets of many countries at the time. But not only Austrian, Egyptian and Cuban heads of state, or even the Pope himself, were chauffeured in a Mercedes 600. David Bowie, Pablo Escobar, Coco Chanel, Elvis Presley and many others of the world’s most famous, whether for positive or negative reasons, people were driven around in this epitome of a state limousine. It’s even said that Shah Reza Pahlavi, the last Iranian Shah, used to own 20 of them. The 6.24 metre long and 1.95 metre wide 600 Pullman was built only 429 times. Its dry weight of 2770 kilograms was distributed over a large area via the wheelbase of 3.9 meters. Nevertheless, the Mercedes manages to sprint from 0 to 100 in just under 10 seconds and reaches up to 200 km/h with the help of the four-speed automatic transmission, thanks to its 6.3-litre-V8-engine with 250 hp, which is 100 cubic centimetres larger and much more modern than the Rolls-Royce engine of the time.

The Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman offered here was shipped from Bremen to Los Angeles in beginning of 1966. It was sent to its first owner, Robert E. Petersen, founder of the Petersen Automotive Museum. Petersen was a successful publisher as well as the founder of various successful magazines such as "Hot Rod", "Guns & Ammo", "Motor Trend" or "Motorcyclist". They reflected his hobbies and interests and eventually earned him a place in the American "Motorsports Hall of Fame" in 2013. Therefore it was no surprise that the automobile enthusiast would acquire a considerable private collection over his lifetime. Petersen purchased the vehicle directly from Mercedes-Benz of Hollywood. The car’s registration documents show that the vehicle was first registered to the Petersen Publishing Co. on 28.02.1966. In the following years, the vehicle was used regularly, as can be seen from the mileage recorded in the workshop bills. Petersen took extremely good care of the vehicle and spared no costs. Thus the 600 Pullman was maintained at great expense and regularly serviced and repaired when necessary. Worth mentioning were an overhaul of the brake system in September 1984 for more than $8400, repainting a door after a minor damage, as well as a comprehensive service, during which the exhaust system was also overhauled in August 1992 for more than $3,100, as well as maintenance and repair work in 1999 where the hydraulics as well as the air conditioning and brake system of the vehicle were brought back to good shape at a cost of $10,265. In total, almost a dozen workshop invoices of the car with four-digit costs describing service and maintenance work are currently in our possession. Petersen also had a Becker Grand Prix Radio installed, for which all original papers have been saved. After Petersen opened his automotive museum in 1994, the 600 was used as the showpiece of the museum. Still, or maybe especially because of that, the car was never neglected, as more bills of services and repairs over the following years prove. Although Petersen sold his company in 1996 for 450 million dollars, the vehicle remained in private ownership. On 8.07.2000 the vehicle was registered to the company Peterson Properties with the license plate "SCANDIA". At that time, the vehicle had 36,833 miles on the speedometer. The vehicle continued to stay in America until it was sold on 12.10.2005 via the well-known Otto Althaus to a Dutch dealer, who then sold the vehicle to a Dutch investment company. After the vehicle was shipped to Rotterdam in December 2005 and subsequently delivered to its new owner, the vehicle’s value was estimated and it was registered to the investment company on 5.01.2006. In 2010 and 2011, the on-board electronics and air conditioning as well as the hydraulics were overhauled, and an extensive photo gallery of the vehicle’s insides was also taken. In 2013 the vehicle was finally acquired by Mechatronik and was exported from the Netherlands on 04.09.2013. The thoroughly documented history of this vehicle, as well as the unusually well preserved papers and documents that come with the vehicle, need to be stressed. In addition to original Mercedes-Benz service sheets and vast amounts of workshop bills, the documents also include extremely interesting and important items such as delivery papers, manuals for car and radio, vehicle registration documents, registration certificates and spec-cards.
