The Ferrari 575 Superamerica

combines the breathtaking performance of a Ferrari 12-cylinder Berlinetta with an original and innovative solution of a versatile convertible. The Superamerica is the first production car to feature an innovative technology for a rotating, electrochromic roof. This technology was developed specifically for large glass surfaces and transforms the coupe into a convertible in a matter of seconds. The exclusive and unmistakable design of the Superamerica comes from the house of Pininfarina, while the car takes its name based on a series of limited edition 12-cylinder models from Ferrari produced in 1956 and 1961. The car was designed inside and out by Pininfarina, with the Superamerica maintaining the wonderfully balanced proportions typical of Ferrari's V12 Berlinetta, while cleverly integrating the unique Revocromico roof into its shapes. This innovative roof is seamlessly integrated into the car's lines, thanks to the two side struts—a design detail found in some of the classic Ferrari models—while also serving as roll bars along with the roof structure itself. The entire rear section of the car is characterized by the new carbon fiber trunk, featuring the prominent Ferrari emblem, designed to underscore the muscular yet sensual forms of the Superamerica. The unusual roof gives the car an extremely sporty appearance, highlighted by the standard 19-inch spoke wheels and Bridgestone Potenza RE050 tires. The front of the car features new aluminum-trimmed headlight arrangements and a vent on the hood. The Superamerica's interior is as exclusive as expected: handcrafted leather and carbon fiber details for the roof switches, radio surround, and instrument display. The entire interior is uniquely complemented by the light coming through the square-meter glass roof, with no compromise on comfort aboard the car. The most significant stylistic and functional detail of the Ferrari Superamerica is undoubtedly the unique rotating roof, patented by Fioravanti, which bears the name Revocromico, highlighting the combination of backward rotation and electrochromic technology. The Revocromico™ roof is based on a structure entirely made of carbon fiber, into which the electrochromic glass is inserted. This structure is functionally connected to the rear window of the car. The roof features a single, extremely innovative pivot point of the rotation mechanism, allowing for impressively smooth opening and closing. When the roof bracket is released, the Superamerica transforms from an elegant coupe to a breathtaking convertible in under ten seconds. Upon opening, the roof folds back and seamlessly integrates with the trunk lid. Another sign of the originality of the Revocromico roof is the heated rear window, which also serves as an effective wind deflector when the roof is open. Structural reinforcements have been made around the roof mechanism, while the two specially reinforced side struts also serve as rollover bars. Another technical innovation is the holistic roof-trunk design: the open roof sits flush with the trunk lid, leaving the trunk capacity unaffected by the opening of the roof. The use of electrochromic technology in the passenger compartment is a world premiere in the automotive industry. The glass roof is approximately one square meter (1,130 mm wide and 840 mm long), flooding the passenger compartment with natural light even when the roof is closed. The occupants of the vehicle have the advantage of adjusting the tint of the glass roof according to their own preferences and requirements. The electrochromic glass, manufactured in collaboration with Saint Gobain, is laminated, with the inner surface of one of the glass layers coated with an electrochromic layer. When an electric low-voltage charge is passed through this layer, the electrochromic layer is activated, regulating the tint. In the case of the Revocromico™ roof, this is done through a controller with five different settings located on the central tunnel. In the lightest setting, the transparency matches that of conventional glass, while the darkest tint allows only one percent of sunlight to pass through. Switching from the darkest to the lightest setting takes less than 60 seconds. When the engine is turned off, the glass automatically darkens to the darkest setting to protect the cockpit from sunlight. Regarding safety, maintenance, and cleaning, the glass roof and its structure behave similarly to a conventional windshield. The engine of the Superamerica is based on the most classic of all Ferrari layouts: the V12. The engine, with a 65-degree V configuration, features dual overhead camshafts per cylinder bank and four valves per cylinder. The crankcase, cylinder heads, and oil pan are made of an aluminum alloy. In finest Ferrari tradition, this V12 is also equipped with dry sump lubrication. The Superamerica engine delivers 540 horsepower at 7,250 revolutions per minute (25 horsepower more than the 575M Maranello).
