The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

At the IAA 2009 in Frankfurt, Mercedes-Benz presented the SLS AMG - the new gullwing with the ideal synthesis of Mercedes-AMG and AMG.  An aluminium spaceframe body with gullwing doors, a V8 front mid-engine with 571 hp and 650 Newton metres of torque with dry sump lubrication virtually guaranteed driving pleasure - together with a kerb weight of 1,620 kilograms and a weight distribution of 47:53 between the front and rear axles with a simultaneously low centre of gravity. The facts alone caused numerous goose bumps even before the market launch: a top speed of 317 km/h and a sprint from zero to 100 km/h within 3.8 seconds.  The base price at the time of the SLS AMG's market launch in spring 2010 was a whopping 177,310 euros incl. VAT, where used car prices for decent vehicles are still far higher today. The rising price of the SLS AMG on the used car market is probably also due to the fact that far fewer vehicles were built during the four-year production period than originally planned - and there was never a facelift for the SLS AMG (neither for the exterior nor the interior). All in all, however, the SLS AMG was a perfectly processed driving machine that could compete very well with other sports cars in terms of both performance and driving dynamics - and still can today. Another advantage is that there is no turbocharger or supercharger in the engine compartment and no active suspension - which could quickly become an almost incalculable cost and repair factor, especially for vehicles that are moved very little. However, the striking design of the 197-series SLS AMG in particular continues to fascinate to this day, reinterpreting the breathtaking styling of the 300 SL in the process - one of the outstanding design icons of the Mercedes-Benz brand. With its purist design, the "new" gullwing reflected the teachings of modern sports car construction in parallel: the almost two-metre-long bonnet, the flat greenhouse positioned far to the rear and the short rear with the retractable rear wing stood for dynamism ,just like the long wheelbase, the wide track and the large wheels. The short overhangs determined the proportions just as much as the conception of the super sports car with the front mid-engine positioned far back and low and the double clutch transmission (seven-speed dual clutch transmission 7DCL750 from the manufacturer Getrag) in transaxle arrangement. However, the stylistic highlight of the vehicle was undoubtedly the gullwing doors, which gave the SLS AMG an incomparable charisma - and still represent a unique statement in this vehicle segment today. But the characteristically wide radiator grille with the large Mercedes-Benz and the wing-shaped transverse fin are also reminiscent of the face of the 300 SL sports car legend. The heart of the SLS is a further developed 6.3-litre V8 (6,208 cubic centimetres, M 159 E 63) with 420 kW/571 hp at 6800 rpm. Combined with its low vehicle weight, this results in a power-to-weight ratio of 2.84 kg/hp. The naturally aspirated engine reaches its maximum torque of 650 Newton metres at 4750 revolutions. The V8 engine transmits its power to the rear axle via a particularly light drive shaft made of carbon. The double-clutch transmission is located on the rear axle (transaxle principle) and is firmly connected to the engine housing via a "torque tube". A carbon shaft rotates in the torque tube at engine speed. The advantages lie in the rigid connection between the motor and the gearbox and the resulting optimum support of the forces and torques generated.
